Nothing stands still. Events from the past and anticipations for the future exist in our minds. Our minds travel, despite our bodies not. How something lives in our minds is not always true to reality. Our memory distorts, preserves and educates.
Without reminders of the past, we may never reflect. Yet, reflection is of utmost importance. If not for preservation, these connections and experiences will be forgotten.
Moments return to us in sporadic ways. There are things that we cannot remember, and things that we can never forget. There are moments that we do not understand are significant, until they pass.
Who we are today does not come separate from what we have endured before. Our experiences are a part of us. They are constantly returning through reminders. These occurrences serve as portals to the past. We are not just here, now. Our minds can attempt to navigate this nonlinear mental timeline.
Through an examination of past experiences interacting with current reflection and an assessment of the importance of memory, I am developing visual representations of the arrival, departure and all things in between, of memory. I aim to translate thoughts, emotions and relationships that develop in our mental space, into this physical space; to make mental things tangible.
